And the question is always—
what are we really paying for?
And I don't even remember why that's not an accident. That's the accident. We're gonna talk about it on the cost of culture. Let's get into it. Welcome back to the Cost of Culture Podcast. I'm your host, Chris Harrison, and if you've ever said to yourself, yo, I'm just gonna check my phone real quick, and then somehow 30 minutes, an hour, or even longer goes by, well, this episode is for you because what just happened in that cold opening, that wasn't random. That wasn't bad habits, that was intentional, designed, engineered, and perfected to keep you right where you are, locked in. And today, we are talking about something that might be the most expensive thing in your life, and you're not even paying for it with money, because we talk about money a lot. We talk about prices, bills, inflation, blah, blah, blah. But but what if I told you there's something you're spending every single day that you can't get back? And to be honest, most of us are just giving it away for free. Today, we're talking about attention because in today's world, attention just isn't valuable. It's currency. And the people who control your attention don't just influence what you watch, they influence how you think, how you feel, and eventually how you live. Let that sit for a second. So the real question is, are you in control of your attention, or is something else controlling you? We're gonna get into it. Let's go. So every app on your phone, every notification, every video you watch is competing with one thing: your attention, and whoever gets your attention gets your time. And whoever gets your time, they get your life just for that moment. And the crazy part is most of this is free. I mean, think about it. Instagram is free, TikTok is free, YouTube is free. So you gotta ask yourself a question: how are they making money? Well, I'll tell you, they're selling you. If you're not paying for the product, then guess what? You are the product. Let me break something down for you, real quick. Your phone is not just a tool anymore, it's a system. It's engineered to keep you there. Think about it. Notifications equal rewards, likes equal validation, comments equal engagement, and the infinite scroll equals well, no ending. There's no finish line. You don't complete social media. Like, have you ever noticed how you refresh your feed, you pull down, you release, and you wait to see what pops up. That's a slot machine. Your phone is like a social casino that's in your pocket. Now let's be real for a second, because I'm definitely guilty of this, and I'm pretty sure a lot of you guys are as well. Have you ever picked your phone up to do something important and end up doing everything but that important thing? You check one notification, that turns into a video, that turns into scrolling, and the next thing you know, 30 minutes gone easily. Not invested, not used, but just gone. And the scary part is that feels normal now. And speaking of time and comfort, if you're gonna be relaxing, scrolling, chilling, you might as well be comfortable doing it. Shout out to Pair of Thieves. They've got the most comfortable socks, essentials, and just loungewear out there hands down. Perfect for when you're at home or outside. And if you're listening right now, you can get 15% off your first order using my code BC-ChristopherH368. The link will be in the description. Trust me, once you try it, you'll be locked in. And if you're trying to stay focused, whether it's just getting locked in better, gaming, working, or just even just trying to stay alert, you gotta check out W. I'm talking clean energy, no crash, no jitters. My personal favorite right now is the Retro Sherbert. I'm talking fire. And if you use the code in the description, you'll get 10% off every order. Now let's get back to the show. So I'm gonna say something that might stick. We're losing our ability to focus. Think about it. Everything is fast now. Quick clips, 15 seconds, 30 seconds, swipe, next, rinse and repeat. And now? Because of that, it's hard to sit through full movies, hard to watch a full interview, hard to even listen to a full podcast. We're not bored anymore, we're just overstimulated. And this is where it gets real. This isn't about time, this is about your mind. Constant notifications, constant updates, constant comparison. You don't get silence anymore, you don't get stillness either. And now, peace feels weird. And here's another layer. You think you're choosing what to watch, but really, it's choosing you. Like my previous episodes, I've mentioned this, the algorithm studies you, what you like, what you watch, what you pause on, and then it feeds you more of it. So now you're not just consuming content, you're being shaped by it. So as an algorithm in a nutshell, the algorithm doesn't care what's real, it just cares what keeps you watching. Now let me ask you something. If I told you you could buy back your focus, I'm talking no distractions, no notifications, no endless scrolling. How much would you pay for that? Because people are already doing it. They're doing it by turning off notifications, deleting distracting apps, and paying for ad-free experiences. I mean, we're literally paying to get away from what we used to think was free. So let's break it down. What are we really paying for? Time. Hours a day, gone. Focus, we can't even sit still and think. Peace? Your mind is always on. Identity, I mean you start becoming what you consume. I mean, the other day, I had a moment I was trying to get something done, and I kept picking up my phone over and over and over, and I had to stop and ask myself, am I using my phone or is it using me? So I want you to try something just for one day. Check your screen time and then ask yourself, was it worth it? And did it help you, or did it just pass time? You know, we live in a world where everything is fighting for your attention, but nobody's teaching you how to protect it. So next time you pick your phone up, ask yourself, why am I here? And more importantly, what is this costing me? This has been another episode of the Cost of Culture Podcast, and I'm your host, Chris Harrison, and make sure to follow the IG page at the real cost of culture. And my show is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, and coming soon to YouTube.
